TIMELINE

Publicis Life Brands / Real Science Communications asked us to produce a graphical timeline for their client. Working with Illustrator Scarlett Karsidi, the 2D polygon whimsical design flowed neatly to tell the story of the client's brand. In addition to this, we were able to repurpose the assets into 3D AR animations, allowing the brand's illustrational world to pop to life. Within each "island", subtle movements were added to create a more engaging play.

PRE PRODUCTION | CONCEPT

The original illustrations were drawn in a polygonal style, something we were keep to capture in the 3D models. Each world had a strong narrative waiting to be told through animation. We developed a hero island for the final environment. the idea of communities working together was the essence of this, so we worked on the idea of two islands joined in the center. One area that needed to be explored was how the characters would look from different angles. Our concept designed was able to take the poses from the still images and draw front views and profiles to aide our 3D artists.

POST PRODUCTION | CGI & ANIMATING

The design was moved into 3D modelling, and the structure began to take shape. The 3D model is then textured to look like the faceted polygonal style used in the illustrations. This flat polygonal style is how the models would appear in the AR experience. The characters are made in a much the same was as the environments, initially defining the shape then adding the colour and textures. The rigged models and characters can then be animated to create the small worlds we saw features in the app. This is a labour intensive process, but one that brings the narrative and character of the piece to the forefront.

The development stage is where the interactivity is added to the content. We use the integrations phase after content creation to make sure everything works in the app. We set up 4 contact points for the experience, each would require a marker to trigger the animation. AR markers typically like to have points and edges in order to acquire a solid track, and we found the illustrations themselves to be perfect as AR markers. This allowed us to keep visual consistency between the content and the triggers.

There was additionally a large model of the globe as a centrepiece to the event. We worked with he model maker and booth builder to ensure the markers were positioned correctly to create the perfect user experience.
